|
Swedish massage is based on techniques designed to treat both deep and superficial tissues, prevent and treat muscle injuries, pain
and soreness. The therapist uses skilled manipulation combined with in-depth knowledge of anatomy and physiology to bring
about pain relief. Massage techniques are aimed at correcting and normalizing the body’s soft tissues (muscles, tendons,
ligaments and fascia) and encouraging balance between the musculoskeletal and nervous systems. It also encourages the release
of endorphins, the body’s own pain relieving chemicals. Remedial massage usually incorporates both Swedish and Deep
Tissue massage techniques that are geared to release muscle tension and flush the muscles of metabolic wastes such as lactic
acid.

Deep tissue is a more intense form of massage that was developed to stimulate the deep portions of thick muscles. Slow strokes,
deep finger pressure, compression and friction are utilized to invigorate the muscle fibers, release tension and hasten the
removal of waste products. Strokes run across the fibers of the muscles, tendons and fascia, there is a focus on specific
areas to alleviate chronic patterns of tension in the body. This therapy also aids in the elimination of scar tissue. Deep
tissue is often used in conjunction with other massage techniques such as Swedish and Sports massage.

Trigger points are small, hypersensitive areas
located in body tissues such as muscles, fascia, ligaments and scars. They are usually found at the junction of the nerve
and the muscle at points in the body that are lacking in oxygen and circulation and prone to spasm. The therapist is trained
to skillfully locate and “deactivate” these points through direct pressure that may be momentarily painful but
ultimately greatly relieving. A variety of other massage techniques may be incorporated into the session. Trigger point
therapy is excellent in the management of chronic pain, injuries and headaches.

Sports
massage is typically used before, during, and after athletic
events to prepare the athlete for peak performance. Sports massage relieves stress and tension that builds up in the body’s
soft tissues during exercise. Overuse and overexertion may lead to minor injuries and lesions; these may be quickly and effectively
remedied with massage. It is a deeper and more intense form of massage that incorporates a combination of techniques
including cross-fiber friction, pressure point work, joint mobilization, compression, stretching and Swedish massage techniques.
Therapy is tailored to the individual to ensure optimum performance, injury-free training and prevent post-event injuries.
Sports massage is not only suitable for athletes, it is also of great benefit to those who have physically demanding jobs
or are exposed to postural stress.

Reflexology

Reflexology
is based on the principle that certain parts of the body reflect the whole. Reflex points, which relate to all parts
of the body, can be found in the feet, hands and ears. These points respond to pressure, stimulating the body's own natural
healing process. The body starts progressively clearing blockages, re-establishing energy flows and balancing itself, resulting
in better health. There are many different styles and approaches used in reflexology however the basic principle is constant. Subtle yet powerful, reflexology is becoming increasingly popular in the world of
complementary therapies.

CranioSacral
Therapy (CST) is a gentle, hands-on method of evaluating and enhancing the functioning of a physiological body system called
the craniosacral system - comprised of the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal
cord. Therapists tune into the craniosacral rhythm (which can be felt at different sites around the body) and evaluate the
skull for symmetry of the cranial bones and the flow of the cerebral spinal fluid. Using a soft touch generally no greater
than 5 grams, practitioners release restrictions in the craniosacral system to improve the functioning of the central nervous
system.

Acupressure uses pressure on activation points to stimulate circulation in the body. Illnesses are looked at, as being
blockages to circulation, and with the correct choice of points these stagnations, or blockages can be cleared. Developed in Asia over 5,000 years ago, acupressure is an ancient healing therapy that utilizes fingers to depress
key locations on the skin's surface to prompt healing within the body. Similar to acupuncture, acupressure uses the same reference
points on the body that release muscular stress; thus encouraging better blood circulation. Acupressure is very beneficial as it can relieve pain and bring the body back into harmonious balance.

Shiatsu literally translates
as ‘finger pressure’ and is a Japanese therapy that has its origins in Oriental medial theory and traditional
Japanese massage techniques. The Japanese adopted Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) practices and enhanced its methods to
develop the unique form of treatment no known as Shiatsu. Shiatsu therapists treat the whole body as well as specific problem areas by also addressing
both emotional and physical wellbeing. The aim is to treat the body by balancing the flow of Ki (life energy), applying pressure
